Oh no! Do not panic

Some quick things you can do while we are on our way. Most take less than a minute.

Keep calm
While you wait

Six calm things to try first

General advice only. If you ever feel unsafe, leave the building and call us.

Turn the water off

Find the stopcock, usually under the kitchen sink, and turn it clockwise until it stops.

Open a cold tap or two

That drains the pipes and slows the leak. Leave the hot taps shut.

Catch it and protect

Put buckets and towels under drips, and move rugs and gadgets out of the way.

Water near electrics?

If water is near sockets or lights, switch off the power at the fuse box and keep clear.

No heating? Check the dial

Look at the pressure gauge on your boiler. If it is near zero, ring us and we will talk you through it.

Smell gas? Stop.

Open windows, leave the building and call the National Gas Emergency number, 0800 111 999. Then ring us.

Call right away if you have…

  • Water coming through a ceiling
  • A burst pipe you cannot stop
  • No heating or hot water with little ones or elderly people at home
  • An overflowing toilet or drain
